Iron sights have always served me perfectly well all my life, until my eyesight began to wane - now a quality 4 power optic serves me best. I have always preferred to mount one onto a rifle capable of less than 2" M.O.A. whenever I can. An accurate rifle's potential seems wasted on anything less. High-powered optics are great for high-powered rifles, or pinpoint accuracy for long-range sub-M.O.A. rifle shooting. Prairie dog populations would soon overwhelm the ranchers, if not for the proliferation of twelve-power scopes..!
