I had to choose other because there is no good answer. How do you improve on the buttery smooth action and trigger pull of a factory out of the box Colt Python, Trooper, Anaconda, etc.... or how do improve the out of the box factory look and feel of a gorgeous Smith model 29, 629, 19, 686 etc.... Sure you can have custom wortk and action jobs done to a myriad of revolvers, but is that what the question is talking about. This will likely be a poll of nothing more than personal opinions. If you say that the Colts can't be beat, I agree, and if you say that S&W revolvers are #1, I still agree. If you say that S&W and Colt are not the top 2, you might be a redneck! I mean look at Uberti, Taurus, and others, don't you just love revolvers?

Single-actions: Ruger.
Double-action: S&W and Ruger
D/A Colt's is way down my list. Work on them often, and you will see why.
S/A Colts: not bad.

Smith, hands down. Colt's design is a joke compared to smith's. Pull the latch to release the cylinder??? That is about as natural as pushing a trigger to make a gun fire. Other?? Is there another?

Ruger all the way. SP101, Blackhawk, Redhawk, 2 GP100s 2 Vaqueros and a Single Six. Never have problems with any of them. Only thing is I wont buy any of their new revolvers with internal locks. Pansy Liberal crap for people who shouldnt even have a gun.

I'm going to second wolfslair's comment. I've had Rugers and S&W, and both are great handling and great shooting weapons, but one S&W has had a timing problem after extensive use.

Have a 1957 pre model 29 S&W 44 Mag. Still accurate and a pleasure to shoot. Most handsome revolver and accurate 2nd only to Colt Python-Diamondback. Ruger is good but not nice to look at.

I have four S&W 38 specials. All very accurate, keep them clean and shoot regularly and you will know how your revolver shoots with the same weight bullet. Clean it after each shooting session. I believe that revolvers are more accurate than automatics.

I LOVE SMITH REVOLVERS. BEST FOR SMOOTHNESS AND FEEL. GOT LOTS OF THE FRON 22 TO 44MAG. COLT IS GOOD TO BUT I ONLY HAVE MILITARY SURPLUS COLTS. FROM SHOOTING THEM BOTH. I SAY SMITH IS BEST. BUT I MUST SAY THE MOST DURABLE REVOLVERS ARE RUGERS. TOUGH AS NAILS.

Hard question. 1970 and newer, I would have to go with S&W. I carried a Model 19 for many years in various law enforcement capacities and as far as I am concerned; it is the finest double action revolver ever made. Earlier than 1970, I would probably go with Colt. I have a 1917 45 ACP that I really like. I also have several Colt SAA's. The workmanship on those old Colts is superb. As I said, it's a hard question to answer.

My old late 70's Ruger speed6 (SP101) has never failed me and is smooth as can be--I remember "old timers" at that time telling me I was a stupid kid and should have bought a colt. I do own an old WW2 Colt Commando .38--great gun. Also have a S&W 625 .45 acp revolver and a ruger super blackhawk in .30 M1 cal. Bought a taurus model 605 for the wife--she doesn't like revolvers--or at least this one.

Having never owned a S&W or a Colt I had to pick other. I've owned 4 Rugers, 2 Single-Six, 1 Blackhawk, and 1 Redhawk and they are all fine revolvers. I also have 2 Dan Wessons, a 357 SuperMag and a 357 Mag. The SuperMag will shoot a 3 inch group at 200 meters from a Creedmore position and both are built like tanks. I also have a Manurhin 22 Silhouette that is amazingly accurate even with the lowest quality .22LR ammo. I don't think this poll is quite fair since there so many great revolvers out there besides S&W and Colt. Besides, I think the best built revolver currently made is Freedom Arms.

It's tough to generalize, but I gotta say that I love the Ruger GP100 and my grandfather's security six. Smith and Wesson makes really good weapons, but they are expensive. Ruger is the best bang for your buck. (Pun intended.) Smith is better overall than Ruger, but for the price Ruger is better. Quality wise, Ruger is almost to Smith and Wesson's level, but is significantly lower in price. I love to have both weapons companies products in any case. I do think that Colt is highly overrated AND overpriced. They are an average product and not better than Ruger, Smith and Wesson or even Charter Arms. I've shot them all and Colt is okay, just not great.

Ruger, no contest. They handle all of the heaviest .44 mag loads and my Super Black Hawk has all the classic style of the 1873 colt. As far as reliability I am almost positive it will be working like the day it was made when they lay me 6 feet under.

I bought my Colt Python from my Dad when i was 14 years old. It just gets better with time. I have shot alot of revolvers and even though the older Smiths are really good (I'm talking the old P&R guns not the new crap they're putting out now) The Colt Python is still by far the standard by which all others are judged. Bought a Trooper III (Built on a Python frame) at a gun show a few years ago. Still superior to anything else out there. Colt will always be Number 1 in my book.

i chose colt, i have had a trooper mk 3, and a peacekeeper (trooper variant), and both were great, i have had a s&w 629, and the barrel twisted, after firing, sent it back to the factory, shot it again, and it began to twist. sold it, bought a classic hunter 629, and it's barrel is showing signs of twisting, gave it to a friend, and bought a ruger vaquero. i have a s&w 28, that is one sweet shooter. but i chose colt, because i have never had a problem with them

Ruger should have been on the list instead of "Other". I believe the Ruger security six, stainless 4" barrel is probably the best overall revolver ever made. The S & W mountain guns are probably the best dedicated purpose revolver ( Big Bore, Carry all day, Hunting & self defense) made today. The colt python is the best production .357 gun.

They all vary by model. My Mod 15, 19, 27, 28 & 29's are great but they are all older than 30 years. I am not partial to S/S or new models. My Ruger S/A Mod's are trouble free. The S/A Colt is very good (2nd Gen) but I don't like their D/A. I like the Colt 1911 Models older than 70 series. Thanks for asking.

years ago my ruger superblackhawk 44mag stopped hitting the primers hard enough to go bang. now my 357 blackhawk is having the same issue. cant buy parts and do it myself like i would for s&w if needed. my s&w 39 was under water for a couple of days- ugly now but still shoots good. my 5906 broke but the extractor was cheap and i got the part myself to fix. if you shoot enough they will all break or need work eventually. so, s&w is my choice ince i never had a colt.

As for the post about Harleys being the best. You must be joking right? I have owned 5 peice of crap Harleys over the years and in my humble opinion all they are is an over priced, low tech, yuppie lazy boy on two wheels. I get a kick seeing the matching his and her, sandle wearing yuppies acting out some Easy Rider image. You want to compare bikes? I changed over to Jap Sport Bikes 15 years ago and currently own a 2008 Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja. All high tech, twin spray per cylinder injectors, titainium through out and out right brutal performance that is meant for the dedicated rider only. They do not leak nor vibrate and their cost factor reflects the hi tech machine that you pay for. Too bad the Goverment bailed Harley out back in 85 as they would be only history now where they belong.
Hard to face the truth as you wave at your fellows high monthly payments as you pass each other while shaking on the down the road. Try a BMW if you want a quality cruiser and stop the myth that Harleys are top notch, they are junk and look just like the next one you see shaking itself to death while waiting for the light to change.
Open your eyes and take a ride on a Italian, Jap or German bike before you make a claim that Harleys are the best and only copied.
What a joke! Happy waving!

Dave, you don't hand load do you? If you did you would see that some load manuals have separate data for 357 magnum and 44 magnum loads. They will have a your standard data for S&W, Colt, Taurus, etc and then the other section will be considerably hotter loads that specifically states 'FOR RUGER, FREEDOM ARMS REVOLVERS AND T/C ONLY'... Now for all you Ruger bashers explain that?!?!?.........

Bill, you are full of it...... you can buy parts for rugers just as easily as you can for S&W's. sounds like you may need new hammer springs in your rugers? I would much rather have to change a hammer spring in a ruger any day before I had to change one in a S&W. The Rugers hammer spring is a snap because the mechanism is soooo simple....anyone with half brain and a little mechanical knowledge can swap the hammer spring out. S&W's on the other hand are a straight up pain in the you know what... and takes some serious finesse to put the mechanism back together, you darn near need to be a watch maker to fix a S&W revolver.

AZTony has a VERY good point. The Ruger Sp100/101 takedown is a cinch and replacing parts is easy. Woe unto him that takes the side plate off of a Smith and can't get the clockwork back into the frame. My friend is a gunsmith and he gets about 2-3 "partial" guns a year that people bring to him in ziplock baggies with "all of the parts"--uh huh---he always finds stuff missing that has flown off into space
